Inviting Creativity Into Routine
Do you ever feel like your creativity is overshadowed by constant meetings and firefighting?
It’s easy for talented leaders to keep busy solving problems. But creativity cannot be scheduled – it must be allowed to bubble by creating space in your calendar.
Start by auditing your calendar. Where can you pause and let your mind wander? If there isn’t space, schedule regular, weekly unscripted time or deep work blocks. Use it for brainstorming, writing to clarify your thoughts, or investigating an intriguing idea.
To get out of a rut, change your inputs. Step outside your industry bubble by listening to a podcast from a different field or asking someone outside your company how they'd solve a stubborn problem. Peer groups are a great option. Mixing perspectives leads to innovative thinking.
When you feel blocked, make small changes to your routine. Take a new route to work, try a different lunch spot, or rearrange your workspace. This will shift your perspective!
Most importantly, give yourself permission not to be productive during creative time. The best ideas often arrive unexpectedly when you allow room for surprise. Invite creativity but don't force it. Regularly making space for it will enrich your work.
Until next time, Sherif
